Signatures of past environmental and climatic changes in peat and lake sediment sequences from subarctic Sweden

Ulla Kokfelt, CENPERM/Department of Geography and Geology

Lakes and mires provide excellent archives of past environmental and climatic changes that can be reflected in different components of their sediments and peat. Changes in some components, such as nutrients and remnants of vegetation/lake communities, may reflect internal ecosystem responses to external forcing. Other components, such as pollen or minerogenic particles, may on the other hand mirror external signals that are independent of the ecosystems themselves. Here, records from peat and lake sediment sequences from subarctic Sweden are presented, revealing new insights to the attribution and understanding of environmental changes and climate variability during the last Millennium.
